Corrosion aging selection guide

Salt Spray & Corrosion Test Chambers

A salt spray chamber evaluates corrosion resistance of protective coatings, electroplating and metallic components through controlled atomized salt solution or alternating wet/dry cycles. Proper selection starts with the required corrosion test chemistry and cycle type.

Salt Spray and Corrosion Test Chamber
Configured for continuous & cyclic corrosion. Precise quartz nozzles, saturated air barrel and corrosion-resistant body construction.

What the system controls

Reproduce the chemical and thermal stresses that drive accelerated corrosion.

Fog fallout rate

Quartz nozzles and precision dispersion towers maintain uniform salt fog fallout (1.0–2.0 mL/80 cm²·h).

Solution chemistry

Supports 5% NaCl neutral salt spray (NSS), acetic acid (ASS), and copper-accelerated CASS solutions.

Saturated air barrel

Pre-heats and humidifies compressed air to prevent nozzle crystallization and stabilize internal pressure.

Chamber temperature

Precisely controls 35°C for standard NSS/ASS tests or 50°C for CASS and specialized thermal cycles.

Cyclic transitions

Optional CCT features automate switching between salt fog, forced hot-air drying, and high-humidity stages.

Pneumatic purge & logs

Exhaust defogging purge before lid opening, low-brine alarms, and continuous test parameter tracking.

Materials & failure modes

Use salt fog or cyclic corrosion when surface protection and metallic durability are critical.

Typical programs evaluate painted panels, electroplated hardware, anodized aluminum, marine coatings, automotive underbody parts and sealed electrical enclosures.

Paints and organic coatings Blistering, filiform corrosion and rust creepage along scribed lines.
Electroplated & galvanized metals White rust on zinc plating, red rust breakthrough and pitting.
Automotive & marine alloys Galvanic corrosion, intergranular attack and structural surface oxidation.
Electrical connectors & hardware Contact resistance drift, pin corrosion and fastener thread seizure.

Configuration comparison

Separate standard continuous salt fog from cyclic corrosion options.

Review each subsystem against your target corrosion standard and specimen load. Chamber structural material, nozzle configuration and utility interfaces must be confirmed before quotation.

Selection item Configuration to review Confirm before quotation
Test mode & chemistry Continuous NSS/ASS/CASS chamber vs. multi-stage Cyclic Corrosion Test (CCT) system. Required pH range, copper chloride addition and whether dry/humid stages are needed.
Chamber construction Reinforced PVC (up to 55°C) or high-temperature PP / fiberglass-lined structure for CASS & CCT. Maximum operating temperature required by your highest-stress test standard.
Atomization & brine supply Tower-type quartz nozzles, external brine reservoir and automatic water-seal refill. Continuous un-refilled test duration (e.g., 48h, 240h, 1000h) and collection funnel arrangement.
Specimen mounting V-grooved slotted racks (15°–30° angle) and fiberglass hanging rods. Panel dimensions, heavy component weight limits and total specimen quantity per batch.
Utilities & exhaust Oil-free compressed air input, DI water connection and acid-mist exhaust drainage. Available laboratory air pressure (0.2–0.4 MPa), floor drain and external exhaust routing.

Method comparison

Continuous salt spray or cyclic corrosion (CCT)?

Continuous salt fog and cyclic corrosion systems serve different qualification goals. While continuous spray excels at rapid quality control of coatings, cyclic corrosion alternates salt mist, drying and humidity to replicate outdoor atmospheric degradation.

Choose continuous NSS / ASS / CASS when

Your procedure specifies constant atomized fog at 35°C or 50°C (ASTM B117, ISO 9227) for comparative batch QC, plating thickness verification or pass/fail screening.

Choose cyclic corrosion (CCT) when

Automotive or marine standards (ISO 14993, SAE J2334, VDA 621-415) require programmed transitions between salt spray, hot-air drying and condensation humidity—or combined prohesion cycles.

Standards-oriented selection

A standard number is the starting point—not the complete chamber specification.

Always confirm the exact test chemistry (NSS, ASS, CASS or cyclic), chamber temperature, fallout collection rate, specimen inclination angle and test duration.

ASTM B117

Standard operating practice for continuous neutral salt spray (NSS) apparatus.

ISO 9227

Corrosion tests in artificial atmospheres — NSS, ASS and CASS salt spray methods.

ASTM B368

Copper-accelerated acetic acid-salt spray (CASS) testing at 50°C.

IEC 60068-2-11 / -52

Basic continuous salt mist and cyclic salt mist testing for electronic components.

ASTM G85

Modified salt spray testing (prohesion, acid cyclic and SO2/salt fog annexes).

Automotive CCT

Review SAE J2334, GMW 14872, ISO 11997 or customer cyclic profiles before configuration.

RFQ checklist

Salt spray chamber FAQ

Questions to resolve before selecting a chamber.

Can one standard salt spray chamber run NSS, ASS and CASS tests?

Yes, provided the chamber body and heating elements are rated for the 50°C CASS operating temperature and corrosion-resistant PP/PVC materials are used. Switching solutions requires thorough tank and nozzle flushing.

How do I choose the right internal chamber volume?

Select the volume based on specimen dimensions and total surface area so fog settles freely on all samples at a 15°–30° angle without dripping from one specimen onto another.

What utilities are required to operate a salt spray chamber?

You need a clean, oil-free compressed air supply (0.2–0.4 MPa), DI water for solution preparation and air barrel humidification, standard power, and an external vent for salt mist exhaust.

How do you prevent salt crystallization from blocking the spray nozzle?

Our chambers use precision quartz glass nozzles paired with a heated, temperature-controlled saturated air barrel that humidifies compressed air before atomization, preventing crystal buildup during long runs.

Can heavy automotive castings or irregular assemblies be tested?

Yes. Beyond standard V-groove panel racks and fiberglass hanging rods, we can reinforce the bottom grate or engineer custom corrosion-resistant support fixtures based on your part drawings.
